Caddyshack Meets Ryder Cup

The Weekend Format (36 holes) is Four Rounds of 9-hole Match Play

THE TOURNEY FORMAT:

A 25+ year old Boston tradition has found its way to the west coast.  The Tin Cup is your chance to be drafted into golf glory. Once a Spaulding forever a Spaulding. Once a Noonan forever a Noonan. Each year may the best team win and earn the right to lift the Cup!!

Noonans vs. Spauldings in a modified 2-day Ryder Cup Format

Each foursome comprised of 2 x Two-Man-Teams (2 Noonans vs 2 Spauldings)

Friday 18 Holes (Two 9-Hole Matches)

  • Rnd-1: Mano a Mano: Foursome with two individual head-to-head matches of a Noonan vs a Spaulding
  • Rnd-2: Two Man Team Best Ball Foursome (The 2-man-team with the best individual ball w/ individual handicap)

Saturday 18 Holes (Two 9-Hole Matches)

  • Rnd-3: Two Man Team Alternate Shot Foursome (Best 2-man-team ball w/ team handicap)
  • Rnd-4: Two Man Team Scramble Foursome  (Best 2-man-team ball w/ team handicap)

Scoring System: Match Play (each hole worth up to 1 point; Each round up to 9 total team points)

  • Rnd-1: Mano a Mano:  2 Individual H2H player Best Ball Matches (Individual Player hole win = 0.5 points, else push = 0)
  • Rnd-2: Two Man Team Best Ball (Team hole win = 1 point, else push = 0)
  • Rnd-3: Two Man Team Alt. Shot (Team hole win = 1 point, else push = 0)
  • Rnd-4: Two Man Team Scramble (Team hole win = 1 point, else push = 0)

Weekend Aggregate Tournament Score

 (i) all Noonan points won vs (ii) all Spaulding points won determines which team wins the Cup!!!

RULES

Rnd-1: Mano a Mano Best Ball (Fri Shot Gun First 9 Holes)

  • Each foursome will have two separate matches simultaneously occurring
  • Two Head to Head Matches of Best Ball (Noonan-1 vs Spaulding-1, Noonan-2 vs Spaulding-2)
  • Record individual score of each player/ball. Mark score in white area
  • Apply individual handicap to individual player/ball. Mark this adjusted score in yellow area
  • Best handicap adjusted individual score counts as the hole winner of head-to-head match
  • Each individual hole won = 0.5 points, else push = 0 points.
  • Thus if both Noonans won every H2H hole, the score would be 0.5 x 2 x 9 = 9 points.

Rnd-2: Two Man Team Best Ball (Fri Shot Gun Next 9 Holes)

  • Each player on two-man team hits a tee shot and plays own individual ball to end.
  • Record individual score of each player/ball. Mark score in white area
  • Apply individual handicap to individual player/ball. Mark this adjusted score in yellow area
  • Best handicap adjusted individual score counts as the two man team's best score
  • Each team hole won =  1 point, else push  = 0 points.
  • Thus if the Spaulding team won every hole, the score would be 1 x 9 = 9 points

Rnd-3: Two Man Team Alternate Shot (Sat Shot Gun First 9 Holes)

  • Two-man team plays (shares) one ball per hole
  • Each team decides in advance the team’s alternating tee box pattern
  • One Player will tee off on odd numbered holes (11, 13, 15, 17)
  • One Player will tee off on even numbered holes (10, 12, 14, 16, 18)
  • Regardless of who hits last shot on prior hole, tee box pattern remains same.
  • After Tee Shot, team players must each alternate strokes on hole until completion
  • Input team's score in white area. Apply team handicap in yellow area. Adjusted wins
  • Each team hole won =  1 point, else push  = 0 points.
  • Thus if the Noonan team won every hole, the score would be 1 x 9 = 9 points

Rnd-4: Two Man Team Scramble (Sat Shot Gun Next 9 Holes)

  • Each player on two-man team hits a tee shot.
  • Select the best shot & both hit 2nd shot from that location (drop within one club length)
  • Continue this pattern until the team finishes the hole.
  • Record one team score for the hole. Mark this score within the white area
  • Apply team handicap to team score. Mark this adjusted score in yellow area
  • The best handicap adjusted team score wins the hole
  • Each team hole won =  1 point, else push  = 0 points.
  • Thus if the Spaulding team won every hole, the score would be 1 x 9 = 9 points

HANDICAPPING (ACTUAL HANDICAPS)

Every player will play to their actual GHIN handicap. If you don't have a handicap we suggest you get one. It costs $45 a year and you can join an "e-club" here with the Southern Nevada Golf Association (or find your local version). Simply input your scores into the app after you play and you have a handicap.  If you don't have an official handicap by July 19th please send me some scorecards of your last few rounds and we will create one for you.

GENERAL RULES & ETIQUETTE

Everyone invited to the tournament is a solid dude and remember we're just playing for a Tin Trophy!!

NOTE: Course has very strict on pace of play. If your ball is no longer in competition to win the hole please pick-up and concede the hole. All rounds must be completed within 4 hours or less.

  • IF IT'S NOT YOUR BALL DON'T PICK IT UP!!
  • Each foursome must unanimously agree to play a specific tee box
  • No Carry Over Skins (a pushed hole = no point won by either team)
  • Penalty Stroke for lost ball, OB or unhittable ball (one club length, no closer to hole)
  • You may hit in OB if opposing team allows it.
  • Cart Path, Sprinkler or Ground Under Repair (one club length, no closer to hole)
  • Change in lie/Clean ball; opposing team must first approve
  • Always obtain opposing team’s approval before any potential controversial competitive  decision/issue that may arise during round of play.

WHY IS THE MVP CALLED THE MELVIN AWARD?

In 2021 we lost Rob Melvin, a dear friend and Spaulding, much much too early to cancer.  Rob loved golfing with the guys, having a cigar, getting mistaken for the Big Lebowski and never letting anything on the golf course stress him out. More importantly he was an outstanding loving father and husband to his wife & kids and is sorely missed by all of his friends and family today.

Rob was awarded the very first Tin Cup LV MVP in 2018 because after surprising the Spauldings with free team jerseys, he then went on to win plenty of holes in support of the Spaulding's inaugural Tin Cup LV victory.

The Melvin Award is issued annually to the player who lifts his or her team up on their shoulders in victory of the Tin Cup, while embodying team spirit, humor & humility and perhaps making a successful putt from out of a bunker (which Rob was known to do from time to time).

In honor of winning such a prestigious award, the annual Mevlin Award winner receives a commemorative cup and gets to pick his or her prize selection first from the prize pool.

We miss you Rob! Spaulding forever!!
